Two weeks ago, Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek boycotted an event marking Hannukah, a Jewish religious celebration. The mayor crassly blamed the local Jewish leadership for supposedly being political and divisive, which is what Gondek did in rejecting their invitation.
This past week, in an interview with CBC, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, counting himself among “Israel’s strongest friends,” issued a threat against Israel. If Israel does not mind its “short-term actions,” it is “putting at risk the long-term safety and support for a Jewish State.” To my mind, that translates into something like if Israel doesn’t do what Trudeau wants for the sake of keeping his very thin domestic support, Israel will lose its support from the Trudeau government.
